Ingredients

  • ยพ cup black cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp espresso powder (optional)

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.
  • 2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  • 3. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda, and espresso in a separate bowl.
  • 4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture.
  • 5. Stir in vinegar. Mix until just combined.
  • 6. Divide batter into pans. Bake 28โ€“32 minutes.
  • 7. Cool for 10 minutes in pans, then cool completely on racks.
  • 8. Frost with cream cheese or chocolate ganache as desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute black cocoa with Dutch-processed cocoa for a lighter version.
