- 2 ยฝ cups all-purpose flour
- ยพ cup black cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp espresso powder (optional)
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.
- 2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
- 3. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda, and espresso in a separate bowl.
- 4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture.
- 5. Stir in vinegar. Mix until just combined.
- 6. Divide batter into pans. Bake 28โ32 minutes.
- 7. Cool for 10 minutes in pans, then cool completely on racks.
- 8. Frost with cream cheese or chocolate ganache as desired.
Notes
- You can substitute black cocoa with Dutch-processed cocoa for a lighter version.
- The flavor improves if made a day ahead.
